Some special guests visited campus last week thanks to three inventive students who organized the first ever "Pet-a-Pooch" to help Saint Anselm students de-stress during finals. Throughout the day, Thursday through Sunday, May 2 – 5, therapy dogs of all sizes and shapes stopped by with their owners in tow to hang out, play, and be held by eager students.

“I’m so happy people seem to be loving it,” said sophomore Meagan DiDonato who organized the program with fellow students Gianpaolo Rufo ’13 and Jon Wells ’15.

“It takes their mind off everything and they can relax. It is definitely a good study break.”

On Thursday, Diane from Paws for Friendship brought her three rescue dogs: Mojo, Sarah and Munchkin, a miniature pinscher, toy poodle, and toy Chihuahua respectively. On average 40 to 50 students at a time sat in the North Lounge in Cushing, patiently waiting their turn to hold the small dogs.

Somehow I was lucky enough to hold all three of them. It brightened up my whole week after being so totally drained from biology and french that day, it helped me unwind and relax," said freshman William Endicott.

The rest of the weekend delivered border collies, golden retrievers and Saint Bernards. Students came and went, taking study breaks or stopping-by after a final to pet the pooches.

Students from service societies Koinonia and Teddys staffed the event and the organizers hope these groups will take over organizing this event in the future, making it a tradition during finals.

Junior nursing major Molly McClintock stopped by Thursday afternoon and couldn’t get enough of little dog, Mojo. “It was good to have a brief time to get a little love and get back to work,” said McClintock.

She was only one of many who voiced their appreciation for the program and hoped they would see their furry friends again next semester.

The effects of the bombing at the Boston Marathon continue to reverberate. Saint Anselm College students, staff, faculty and alumni ran, assisted or watched the marathon. They helped students assemble and return safely to campus. They witnessed the carnage caused by the two bombs. They participated in the pursuit and investigation that ensued. They followed the events closely through social media and television. And they worried until their loved ones were found to be safe.

A number of Anselmians have reached out to us with stories or reflections, and we decided to present them in this blog. It is a space where all Anselmians can share stories, offer and seek wisdom, and find pastoral guidance as we come to terms with the events that we experienced either first hand or from afar. We hope you will participate.

The opening reception on Thursday, April 11, showcased 29 pieces by 14 students from ceramic sculptures and photographs, to watercolor paintings and charcoal drawings. The reception, which brought together faculty, staff, students, families and community members, was followed by an awards ceremony at 7 p.m.

The top award presented to a piece that reflects the "Portraits of Human Greatness," was given to fine arts major and senior Lauren Miller for her piece, "Born and Raised." First place went to Abigail Crane '15, a nursing major, for "Victory in Death," 2012, charcoal and white chalk on paper; second place to Laryssa Feliciano '13, communications major for "Winter Scene," 2010, gouache on paper; third place was awarded to Carlo D'Anselmi '13, classics major for "Self Portrait," 2012, oil on panel.

Other honorable mention awards were given to Laryssa Feliciano '13 for "The Dance Room," Jasna Numanovic '13, a communications major, "Girl with the Red Hat,"and Miller's "Self Portrait from Life."

The pieces in the student exhibition were selectively chosen due to their impressive quality and ability to complement one another in the showcase by juror Rane Hall, a director at the New Hampshire Institute of Art.

The exhibit displayed pieces that varied greatly in subject and technique, with paintings and drawings made of materials such as crayon, pen, watercolor, gouache, graphite, and chalk. The works of art focused on a variety of subjects, from self-portraits to winter scenes. In addition, two photographs and several sculptures were displayed including ceramic pieces and abstract pieces made of fabrics and household objects.

"I really appreciate the creativity and the quality of the work of the art students. It reflects the quality of education from the fine arts department and the school in general" said student-participant Dao Le '15, whose photograph, "Life's a Song" consisting of silver gelatin print, was on display.

Hawks Honored with Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Excellence

Saint Anselm College is one of 26 Division II schools that have been honored with the Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence for achieving four-year Academic Success Rates of 90 percent or more.

Saint Anselm’s ASR was 90 percent, meaning it graduated all of its student-athletes from the 2002-05 cohort within six years of original enrollment.

Saint Anselm was also one of seven Northeast-10 Conference programs that were included, the most of any conference.

The Division II Academic Requirements Committee created the Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence to recognize programs achieving long-term academic success. The honor is intended to call attention to those programs and is not intended as a ranking.

These stories were originally posted to SaintAnselmHawks.com, the online home of Saint Anselm athletics.
The Academic Success Rate is a measure that reflects the unique qualities of Division II. It measures graduation rates for virtually all Division II student-athletes, including transfers and those not receiving athletically-related financial aid. The inclusion of student-athletes who do not receive athletically-related financial aid distinguishes the ASR from Division I’s Graduation Success Rate.

The Division II Academic Success Rate captures about two-thirds more student-athletes than the federal graduation rate, which does not count incoming transfers, counts outgoing transfers as having not graduated and counts only student-athletes receiving athletically-related financial aid. The national four-year ASR average is 72 percent.

No matter what measure is used, Division II student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. The federal rate for the 2005 entering class of student-athletes was 54 percent, compared to 48 percent for the general student body.

While many are looking forward to this summer as time of relaxation and a break from academics, Dr. Katherine Bentz of the Fine Arts Department at Saint Anselm College is looking forward to the much anticipated season for an entirely different reason. From August 2013 through June 2014, Dr. Bentz will be in Florence, Italy as a Fellow of the Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Renaissance Studies.

The fellowship will support a sabbatical year focused on researching and writing for her book, The Cardinal's Garden: Patrons, Landscape, and Viewers in Sixteenth-Century Rome. Dr. Bentz will be one of fifteen Fellows at the Villa I Tatti in the upcoming year.

Dr. Bentz specializes in the painting, sculpture, and architecture of early modern Europe (15-17th centuries), and in Italian art and architecture in particular.

"At the heart of my research are questions about the ways in which works of art and architecture created meaning for those who viewed and experienced them. In other words, I ask why and how meaning is produced for viewers, rather than just what and where they viewed works of art," says Dr. Bentz.

As a Rush H. Kress Fellow, Dr. Bentz will be living in an apartment provided to her by the Villa I Tatti, which overlooks the beautiful city of Florence. She will attend workshops, colloquia, and seminars with an interdisciplinary group of scholars from all over the world who are interested in Italian Renaissance culture.

While at the Villa I Tatti, Dr. Bentz will focus primarily on researching and writing her book. "Such a fellowship provides a real gift–time to just sit, think and write,” said Dr. Bentz.

With an abundance of resources available “within walking distance," Dr. Bentz will visit various archives, libraries, and art museums in the Villa and around Florence to expand her research on the gardens built by Cardinals in Rome during the period of church reform in the later sixteenth century.

Dr. Bentz will examine the social motives behind the building of these gardens as well as the viewer's experience and reception of these spaces. In addition to all the work she will be conducting, she added, "I'm sure I'll also spend plenty of time enjoying great food!"

“It’s really a competitive fellowship, and it is just a great honor to be chosen,” said Dr. Bentz.

“In the field of Italian Renaissance art, culture, and history, the Villa I Tatti Fellowship is really one of the most prestigious postdoctoral fellowships available.”

Dr. Bentz is greatly looking forward to the unique opportunities that the fellowship will bring.

The group, which focuses on the teachings of the Catholic faith and the unity of the women involved, has brought together more than 60,000 women in Canada and the United States.

The 2013 class of Daughters of Isabella.
Founded in 1897, the group was started as a women's version of the Knights of Columbus and focuses primarily on unity, charity, and friendship. The group’s goal is to follow in the steps of their patroness, Queen Isabella of Castile, to assist in the promotion of the good of society by following the teachings of the Catholic tradition and taking part in acts that aid in the betterment of society.

As a new addition to campus, the induction of 66 women into the group was a first in the history of Saint Anselm College. The conferral, which included the group’s chaplain Father Anselm Smedile, O.S.B., and four international members of the Daughters of Isabella, took place in a private, spiritual ceremony in the lower Abbey Church. Following the private conferral was a public induction of the group’s officers, who were accompanied by Saint Anselm College's Knights of Columbus.

After Saturday’s conferral ceremony, the new circle of the Daughters of Isabella joined together to attend the Palm Sunday Mass in the Abbey Church, followed by a reception in Cushing’s North Lounge, and the group’s first official business meeting, where the group discussed what to look forward to as the group proceeds.

Due to the hard work and tremendous efforts of sophomore founder and regent, Molly White ’15 and the group’s advisor and treasurer, Director of Campus Ministry Sue Gabert '91, the weekend was a successful and rewarding one for all involved.

“I feel so blessed to be working with such an amazing group of energetic and dedicated women. These girls have come together in faith to serve our community. Based on the motto, 'Unity, Friendship, and Charity,' the Daughters of Isabella strive to foster communities where these three characteristics thrive, and I am so grateful to all 66 of these girls for coming together with their enthusiasm to move forward serving as a new family,” said White.

All of the new members of the Daughters of Isabella are greatly looking forward to a successful future at Saint Anselm College.

About two dozen former Players were in the audience, as were friends who worked on sets, costumes, and other aspects of the musical. After the show, they gathered in the College Pub to reminisce about their thespian days and renew old acquaintances.

Among the returning Players was Heather (McEwan) Mandosa ’98, who played the mayor’s wife. Her role became a long term engagement when she married Frank Mandosa’96, the actor who played the mayor.

Also in attendance were 1995 cast members Michael Buckley ’97, Michael Burglund, Sheila Moreau ’95, Tara (Murgo) Payne ’95, and Laura (Burglund) Pawlyk ’96, as well as 1995 choreographer Sarah (Frazier) Pompeo ’96. The only lead actor missing was Brendan O’Brien ’95 (who played the Presley-esque rock and roll star Conrad Birdie), now a U.S. Department of State official in Washington, D.C.

Carey (Winslow) Cahoon ’98, a 1995 cast member, was the 2013 show’s director. She has directed the past 11 Abbey Players spring musicals. At least one member of the 1995 “Children’s Ensemble,” Charles Perreault ’04, also enjoyed the matinee.

The number of hugs passed around in the Dana Center lobby that afternoon was testament to the strong relationships formed on the Abbey Players stage. Professor Landis Magnuson, who produced the show both years, was a happy man.

Like all the spring musicals, Bye Bye Birdie features a big cast, plenty of singing and dancing, and catchy tunes—in this case songs including “Put on a Happy Face” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.”

Some of the talented actors, singers and dancers in the current cast were nostalgic about appearing in their final production. But, after 64 seasons, the future is as bright as ever for the Abbey Players, judging from the performances of several freshmen, including leads Meredythe Leonard (Kim MacAfee) and Jim Brennan (Conrad Birdie).

With a crowd of several hundred Anselmians gathered in the Carr Center, the sixth annual Sr. Pauline Lucier Relay for Life kicked off Friday evening. 774 participants on 50 teams had raised $45,422 by the time Peg Bourque, Associate Vice President of Finance/Asst Treasure of the Treasurer's Office led the first lap of a 13-hour marathon walk to honor cancer survivors and remember loved ones lost while raising money to help fuel the world's largest walk to end cancer.

A beloved member of the Saint Anselm College community, Sr. Pauline lost her battle with cancer shortly after being made aware that the college would name the Relay in her honor. This year's walk was the first with no current students having been fortunate enough to encounter Sr. Pauline Lucier, C.S.C. in her life's ministry. Father Mathias Durette, O.S.B. and Dean of Students Alicia Finn offered poignant remembrances and reflections to a captivated crowd as the walk commenced.

The event would conclude at 7 a.m. Saturday with the announcement that $56,672 had been raised, topping the goal of $55,000 set by an ambitious organizing committee chaired by Jimmy Doogan and Devon Langin, both of the class of 2013.

Groups of college service societies, sports teams, student clubs, faculty, staff and friends of the college joined in the procession after survivors completed their first lap around the Carr Center. Bourque, as grand marshal would lead more than twenty survivors including students family members, college administrators and faculty.

Later in the evening, a half hour of silent walking in a darkened Carr Center during Luminaria would serve as a poignant reminder of the wide reach of cancer across the Anselmian community as glowing bags ringed the track with names of loved ones affected by cancer.

In a new addition to the night's events, dozens of students would donate at least eight inches of their hair in a public ponytail clipping ceremony as part of the 'Pantene Beautiful Lengths' campaign to provide free real-hair wigs for those fighting cancer. One at a time, donors introduced themselves, and offered a person or reason for whom their donation was in honor of before a friend would clip between eight and 12 inches of hair for donation.

Throughout the night, walkers would continuously circle the track to celebrate, remember and fight back. Each hour, a service society would sponsor an event at the main stage, ranging from a talent show to a dance-off. In what is becoming an Anselmian tradition, walkers rushed to the open floor to "wobble" as the eponymous song blasted through speakers around midnight.

On Monday, March 11, 2013, students in the field of education were receiving an education of their own as they took part in mock interviews with principals from around New Hampshire. The 12 seniors with elementary education majors or secondary education minors sat down with ten current and former school principals from the Manchester, Derry, Bedford, Londonderry and Merrimack school districts to discuss how the students should conduct themselves in future interviews.

In the 7th annual event arranged by education department chair and professor Laura Wasielewski, the students were given the opportunity to network with men and women who could potentially be their future employers. During the event held at Joseph Hall, each student received direct feedback from five of the ten principals in attendance, including two Saint Anselm College alumni Ed Joyce and ’94 and Frank Hoell ’73, who instructed them on how to organize their résumés and cover letters, which gave the students the opportunity to see just what their employers would be looking for when they apply for jobs in the very near future.

Described as “A favorite event of the principal and the student,” which the principals often view as a “win, win situation,” Professor Wasielewski noted that it really helps the students make connections, which are essential to the “relational” field of education. In addition, some students were able to obtain substitute teaching positions by many of the principals in attendance.

“What is really affirming for me is that the principals speak very highly of the students’ preparation. They are strong in their content and pedagogy,” said Professor Wasielewski, who has been running this event since 2006.

However, it is not just the principals that speak highly of the event, as Lauren Ross '13 said, " I am very thankful that area principals took time out of their busy schedules to come in and meet with the senior education majors. The mock interviews provided me with an excellent insight on how the interview process works. It was a great experience which allowed me to start networking and get my name out there."

The event was a success for all in attendance, and as the seniors approach graduation, they are grateful for this experience which will be extremely beneficial to them in their search for employment.

When we hit the road early Friday morning, the vans were packed with our bags and pillows, snacks for the road, and the sincere excitement of 12 people who knew they had a magnificent journey ahead of them. Our drive would take us across nine states, almost 900 miles, and would require two full days of driving through the countryside with nothing to do but gaze out at the landscape along our journey.

We were lucky enough to not hit any traffic the whole day as we arrived at our Red Roof Inn in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. I knew by the end of the first day that we had a special group of people and we were all going to bond over the course of the week. After another full day of driving, we arrived Saturday night at our site, a small farm run by the Glenmary Missioners in Lewis County, Kentucky, a place that quickly became our home away from home.

Service & Solidarity Missions: For the 23rd year, 102 Saint Anselm students are spending their spring break on volunteer service trips to 9 sites in the United States as part of Saint Anselm College's Service and Solidarity Missions program. Throughout the week, participants learn about Catholic social teaching while also living and working with those most in need. Each trip is led by two Saint Anselm students.

We were greeted by three men in their early twenties: Walter, Julien and Kirk. They welcomed us to the farm and showed us around the facilities. They introduced us to two key concepts: living simple and living on God’s time. They recycled everything, left little waste, had little in the way of electronics of outside contact, and there were not watches or clocks to be seen. In this way, they could completely live in the present and focus on what’s in front of them.

After a good night’s rest and an afternoon hike on Sunday, volunteers from three other schools arrived on the site: Loyola Maryland, Loyola Chicago, and the Walsh University from Ohio. From the beginning, our group welcomed the newcomers and everyone befriended one another. By the end of the week, everyone knew everyone’s names and it was like we were one big family.

The sites we worked at over the course of the week included a food pantry where we converted an old high school into a place where they fed 400 families a month, low income household construction, visiting various church services, spending time at nursing homes and senior centers, meeting a youthful and spirited old woman who, despite our shock, confessed that she was 93 years old, and several other sites.

When the different returned to the farm at the end of the day, everybody had a positive and friendly attitude, asking others how their day was and sharing their experiences. One group would have supper duty each night, cooking delicious meals like Shepherd’s Pie and Chicken and Cheese Casserole.

We ended each night with reflections, which always had a theme like friendship or social justice. Whether it was in big group reflection with all 43 volunteers plus the farm managers, or small groups featuring just the students from each school, everybody really opened up and made it possible for each individual to express their thoughts and beliefs.

For me personally, the three farm managers stood out as role models and inspirational people. Their calming presence, selflessness, and dedication to service had us all in awe throughout the week. Though close to us in years, they possessed a certain passion and wisdom beyond their years. I hope everyone gets a chance to meet somebody like them in their lifetime because I know I will never forget them.

Two things really struck me the most throughout the week. First was the affectionate and welcoming bond that all 43 of us volunteers formed in just a few short days. I came into the trip hoping make a few close friends within my group. Now I can honestly say I have friends all over the country that I will never forget and we’ve already formed a Facebook group to stay in touch.

The second thing I take home with me is the lessons that the people of Lewis County taught me. So many of them have so little, but instead of dwelling on what they don’t have, they’re gracious and proud of what they do have. This is a town that didn’t even have 911 until last year and so many of them live on welfare, but they hold their heads high and with dignity.

It would be impossible for me to fit all the eye-opening, incredible experiences I shared and selfless people I met over the week into this short blog, but I can honestly say I’ll never forget any of it. Service trips like these truly demonstrate the goodness of humanity and the power that each individual has to change the world.

Although our students may not be preoccupied with classes and day-to-day routines, this week has offered many an opportunity to delve into service, visit Panama on a study-tour program, present at conferences and put athletic talents on display. In case you've missed anything, we've compiled a roundup, and offered links to the numerous blogs and stories that have caught our attention this week.

Service & Solidarity

For the 23rd year in a row, 102 Saint Anselm students are spending their spring break on volunteer service trips to nine sites across the United States as part of Saint Anselm College's Service and Solidarity Missions program.

Beginning Friday, March 1, students left campus for Detroit, Mich., Houston, Texas, Orland, Maine, Manchester, N.H., Ridgley, Md., Aberdeen, Miss., Philadelphia, Penn., Vanceburg, Ky., and Phoenix, Ariz. Each group is staying with a different organization, spending their time in service and solidarity with those less fortunate. Students are repairing homes, serving food, painting and cleaning, and doing whatever is necessary to support their site.

Our Michigan contingent caught the attention of the Port Huron, MI newspaper, The Times Herald on Monday with an article – "Spring break fixups; College kids lend a hand to Habitat" – and video highlighting the efforts of the group at the Croswell home of a local veteran.

In Philadelphia, our students spent a day with Saint Anselm alum, Dan McVay '96 who shared the following reflection.

"I worked with the Philly group today at Temple Hospital. They participated in a program called Cradle to Grave which brings young people into the depths of the hospital to learn the realities of gun violence. It was an emotional day for all the participants as they heard about young people who had lost their lives in Philadelphia and from the parents of some of these victims. They also met a young lady who survived her gun shot wound but was confined to a wheelchair, having lost her right leg and had limited use of her hands. The tour ended when we came up to the trauma bay shortly after a gun shot victim had been brought into the ER. The victim had been shot multiple times in the East Falls section of the city and died while the group was in the hospital."

Throughout the week, participants learn about Catholic social teaching while also living and working with those most in need. Each trip is lead by two Saint Anselm students. The groups return to campus at the end of spring break, on Saturday, March 9.

BLOG: Participants are submitting posts to the Service & Solidarity blog, and using #SACSBA on Twitter to share their experiences. The group is traveling Feb. 28 to March 10 accompanied by adjunct economics and business professor Marieke Martin. Throughout the week, students are examining the political and economic dynamics of Panama, coupling a semester of classroom learning with on the ground, real-world experience

The trip itinerary includes a variety of cultural and business experiences with a heavy focus on company visits and international commerce. During their 10-day tour, they explore the Panama Canal, Panama's stock exchange and national bank, and a coffee plantation and production facility, as well as visit companies including Autoridad Maritima (Panama's coast guard), Bern Hotels and Resorts (real estate company), and El Rey Supermarket.

Psychology Majors Present at Eastern Conference

Fourteen Saint Anselm psychology students and one recent graduate have been selected to present their research at the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA) Conference in New York City March 1-4. The students, along with four faculty members, will spend four days at the conference with scholars from other colleges along the east coast.

Selection is very competitive, according to Professor Elizabeth Ossoff, Ph.D., chair of the psychology department. Each student submits a short and long abstract regarding an experimental study with significant findings.

This year, approximately 28% of the graduating psychology department seniors will be presenting in the conference. This means that one out of four of the psychology seniors are producing work which has been peer-reviewed alongside faculty and graduate student submissions. Professors Maria McKenna, Loretta Brady, Paul Finn, Kathleen Flannery, and Elizabeth Ossoff have helped students with their research throughout the year.

Men's Basketball

Sophomore Roy Mabrey scored a team-high 15 points to lead four Hawks in double figures, but the ninth-ranked and top-seeded Saint Anselm College men's basketball team was knocked off by fourth-seeded Franklin Pierce University, 71-68, in a Northeast-10 Championship semifinal Wednesday evening at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The Hawks, who lose for just the second time in their last 13 games – with both losses now coming against Franklin Pierce – drop to 23-5 on the season and miss out on their 11th title game appearance.

Sullivan Arena.

The Hawks won their fourth consecutive conference title for the first time in program history, wrapping up their season at 16-8-3.

The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead 4:56 into the contest when Tim King slid a quick pass from the far side of the right circle to the slot for Richard, who let go of a wrister that beat Franklin Pierce goaltender Dave O'Brien gloveside. Evan Gogonis also earned an assist on the play.

Men's hockey captains (L-R) Tucker Mullin, Tim King and Greg Crovo with Saint Anselm Athletics Team IMPACT teammate Benjamin Roy accept the NE-10 trophy.

Saint Anselm doubled its lead at the 10:25 mark of the opening period as Joe Tebano skated into the zone and sent a shot from the top of the left circle that deflected off a defender's stick and wobbled under the glove arm of O'Brien.

Franklin Pierce put one in the net with 7:43 remaining in the first after Matt Lopes dropped the puck back at the near side of the right circle for Matt Batis, whose hard wrister beat Saint Anselm goaltender Nick Dries to make it 2-1. Kyle Craig was also credited with an assist on the play.

Johnny Daniels nearly gave the Hawks their two-goal lead back with 44.7 seconds left in the period on a wrister from the left circle, but O'Brien made a sprawling glove save to his left to deny the attempt.

The Hawks wound up pushing their lead to 3-1 3:07 into the second period when Greg Merrill ripped a shot from the middle of the slot that found the back of the net after a feed from the right endline by John Hyslip.

Saint Anselm extended its advantage to 4-1 at the 12:16 mark of the middle stanza after Bryan Luther cleaned up a loose puck following a flurry of activity in front of the Franklin Pierce net. After a pair of shots from Alex Pascal and Tebano were stopped by O'Brien, Luther came in at the right doorstep and jammed the puck in past the diving goaltender.

The Ravens trimmed their deficit to 4-2 at the 8:23 mark of the third period when Anthony Chighiso's pass from the right endline was quickly swept in past Dries on the doorstep by Michael Carr. Roscoe Sweeney also picked up an assist on the sequence.

The Hawks all but iced it with 5:16 to go when a one-timer from the slot by Bryan Sullivan found the top right corner of the net after a pretty feed from the left endline by Eric Czapka.

Gogonis and Merrill also joined Richard on the All-Championship Team.

Prior to her current visiting faculty position at the college, where she is teaching international business, Martin worked in international business development for a German bio-tech firm focusing on corporate and government research project implementation and management.

During the college's current spring break, Martin is leading a course, "EC421: Discovering Business Abroad: Developing Markets," on a week long study-tour through Panama, the country of focus for the students enrolled in the class. Through the next week, students will examine the political and economic dynamics of Panama, coupling a semester of classroom learning with on the ground, real-world experience.

"Both business and academia has brought me to many countries both developed and emerging not only to conduct and negotiate business, but to teach and be taught about the vary topics I wish to help students discover in this course," says Martin.

In the classroom, students have analyzed the cultural, political and economic factors that influence the dynamics of developing market economies. Students have explored the challenges and issues surrounding business conditions, managerial issues, and strategic operations through a mixture of classroom lectures, case studies, company visits, and interaction with Panamanian academics and business professionals.

The course is designed for a fully immersive experience for all students to develop essential international business skills and experience. Open to students of all majors and interests, Professor Martin has already led seven lectures, preparing students for the current week of on the ground experience in country.

Upon return to Saint Anselm, students will attend the last three classroom seminars to recap and discuss their experience abroad. Students will evaluate the business environment and prepare a final business recommendation report and presentation.

"Through my past and ongoing experience of international markets, I bring to the classroom a level of discovery and exchange that students can only truly experience through direct interaction supported by focused discussion," says Martin.

While most of us are making trips between classes and dorms, Lyndsay Robinson '14 is making her commuter-style trips to Washington, D.C., with three trips to the capitol in just one week. Her Mission? To help fix the debt. As a politics major, president of the Student Government Association, and the Chair of the Kevin Harrington Student Ambassador Program, among many other things, Lyndsay Robinson seizes almost every opportunity to get involved in the campus community, as well as in the world and political affairs off campus. The sky truly is the limit for the Robinson and she is not slowing down on her path to success any time soon.

Recently, Robinson was specially selected as one of several Student Government Association presidents across the country to participate in a program sponsored by the Fix the Debt organization in Washington, D.C. to address current financial problems with the National Chambers of Commerce. Among the topics, Robinson discussed the ever-concerning topics of employment outlook for students after college, as well as student debt. Due to Robinson’s engagement, intellectual ideas, and expression of opinions, she was one of only two students countrywide that were chosen out of 300 potential students to meet and discuss student debt with the National Republican House Budget Committee this Wednesday, February 27.

Robinson is greatly looking forward to her discussion with the political leaders on Capitol Hill. “It literally blows my minds that I even get to do it,” Robinson said, noting that in the discussion, she will be able to sit down with former Vice Presidential Candidate Paul Ryan, among many other prestigious politicians, to ask questions and discuss student employment and student debt among many other things. In addition, Robinson will also serve as the student voice for the media during a press briefing with House Budget Leaders, a unique opportunity given to Robinson due to her consistent effort, hard work, and dedication in the political community.

In addition to her excellent performance and work in the Student Government Association, Robinson was recently granted the James F. O’Neil Honorary Scholarship, a national scholarship by the American Legion and St. Anselm alumnus James F. O’Neil. Due to her leadership and academic achievement on campus, and her “potential to be a leader in the community once graduating,” Lyndsay was viewed as the ideal recipient to receive the award named after a man who Robinson describes as an “inspiring and successful leader.” This weekend, Robinson and her mother will be flown down to Washington D.C., where they will be greeted with a presentation of the scholarship. “It is such an honor,” Robinson said, noting that she is greatly appreciative of the financial assistance, and the great opportunities the award provides.

Aside from her great amounts of success in the political field and abundance of current activities, Robinson was just re-elected to serve as another year as the president of the Student Government Association. Due to her consistent effort and engagement at Saint Anselm College, Lyndsay is certainly the right person for the job. “I am so grateful for this school,” noted Robinson, “I have learned a lot inside of the classroom, but what I have learned outside of the classroom has been just as beneficial.”

“If you could trade places with anyone, who would it be?” was the question prompted to junior Dan Higgins as he was handed the microphone. There was not a moment of hesitation, just the cool confidence of a man who had clearly thought about this before: “Darth Vader.”

The Mr. Saint A’s competition featured eight guys who showcased their talents, skills, and humor in front of a packed crowd at the Dana Center. The judge panel comprised of Dr. Catanese, Professor Romps, and Professor Whitney. The boys would be judged on their talent level, their good looks, and most importantly, their ability to make the crowd laugh.

The lineup included Jon Wells, Andrew Lambert, Matt Gonella, Shane Matthews, Mike Valenti, Dan Higgins, Chris Grenier and Matt Pendergast. They began the night by working together in a choreographed dance session that had the crowd laughing early on.

Next up was the swimwear modeling in which the boys showed off their beach bodies and their creativity. Jon Wells got the crowd going with a box that read “censored” as he trotted around the stage. Dan Higgins scuba suit brought laughs as well as Chris Grenier’s American-themed swim trunks and cape.

Then came the talent part of the show, which was undoubtedly the highlight of the night. Jon Wells kicked it off with his rendition of “Call Me Maybe”, aptly named “C-Shop Maybe.” He was followed by Andrew Lambert hitting the notes of “Boyfriend” by Justin Bieber then Shane Matthews showed off his domestic skills as he walked us through the process of making a PB&J sandwich and tossed it into the crowd for a lucky audience member.

Matt Gonnella then strutted his dance moves to “Single Ladies” in a hilarious and outrageous performance which brought uproars of raucous laughter from the crowd. Mike Valenti looked like a modern day Da Vinci with his painting of the judges and was followed by Chris Grenier, who told witty jokes and translated rap lyrics into the diction of everyday conversation.

Not to be outdone, Dan Higgins sang his original version of “The Lazy Song” by Bruno Mars called “Here at Saint A’s” in which he gave a funny, clever, and all-too-accurate tour of the Hilltop accompanied by a well-done PowerPoint. Matt Pendergast wrapped it up with his animal noises that he had been working hard on “for at least two days” and included such unusual creatures as cockroaches and pterodactyls.

Following the talent show, the guys walked the runway in their formal attire, accompanied by the lovely ladies of the Seton Society. Jon Wells brought his razor scooter on the catwalk and Mike Valenti tried to win over the judges by presenting a flower to Professor Whitney..

The final part of the show featured a Question and Answer session, which was pure entertainment for the audience as the boys showed off their sense of humor. Matt Pendergast pretended to be completely senile and deliberately answered all the wrong questions to the great enjoyment of the crowd, and Mike Valenti kept things simple by informing us that his favorite meal at Davison is “chocolate milk.”

All eight boys made excellent candidates for Mr. Saint A’s and really showcased what is so special about the Hilltop. However, the judges could only choose one and they had very difficult decisions to make. After several minutes of deliberation, they submitted their votes and the contestants were brought to center stage as the hosts read the results.

Shane Matthews, with his sandwich-making skills and strong presence in all the events earned him Mr. Congeniality. Jon Wells, with his outrageous swimsuit outfit and scooter skills got him second place. And finally, the one who was consistently funny in every event and won the hearts of the audience with his “Here at Saint A’s” song was Dan Higgins who was awarded first place and named “Mr. Saint A’s.”

The entire event and everybody involved really illustrated what a special place Saint Anselm is. From the brave, hilarious, and talented boys in the competition, to the good-natured judges with a humor all their own, to the packed house of lively and spirited students, to the girls of Seton who organized the whole thing, the competition did far more than showcase the 8 men who tried out. It brought out the best of everyone involved and exemplified what a wonderful place this campus truly is.

The Hawks posted an impressive weekend worth of results with the women's hockey club claiming their second straight ECAC Open title, while the men's squad skated to a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College to advance to the Northeast-10 Championship title game. Following a victory on Saturday afternoon, the men's hoop squad will clinch the Northeast-10 Regular-Season Championship and the top seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship tournament with a win at home on Tuesday night.

Nicholson's OT Tally Lifts Women's Hockey to Second Straight ECAC Open Title

Franny Nicholson scored 2:23 into overtime to send the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory against the College of the Holy Cross in the championship game of the ECAC Open Tournament on Sunday at Sacred Heart University's Wonderland of Ice.

The Hawks, who capture their second straight ECAC Open Championship and first consecutive titles since the 2006-07 and 2007-08 campaigns, wrap up their season at 19-4-4 overall.

Michelle Conway led the way with three points on a goal and two assists. Her five points in the tournament were one more than she tallied in her previous 24 regular-season games this year.

Nicholson picked a fine time for just her second goal of the year and first game winner as she batted the puck in past Holy Cross goalie Alexandra Stevenson after a scrum in front of the net. Sarah Geisinger and Rosemarie Giarrusso were credited with assists on the play.

This marked the final game for seniors Kathryn Picarello, Ciara Petry and Giarrusso, who will graduate in the spring as the program's all-time leader in both points (139) and assists (68) and fell just three short of matching the goals record of 75.

Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the Saint Anselm College athletic department by following the Hawks on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/STAHawks) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/STAHawks).

Men's Hockey Perseveres in 6-3 Northeast-10 Semifinal Win Over Stonehill

Senior John Hyslip scored two goals as the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team took down the Skyhawks of Stonehill College, 6-3, Saturday evening in the semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Championship tournament. With the win, the Hawks jump to a 15-8-3 overall record and advance to the Northeast-10 championship game.

The Hawks jumped on the board at 13:17 of the opening frame when senior Tim King tipped in a short pass from junior Alex Pascal at the left post. Junior Joe Tebano initiated the sequence with a feed to Pascal from the blue line.

Saint Anselm doubled its lead at 18:51 when senior Tucker Mullin slipped in a loose puck behind Stonehill goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos. Freshman Jon Ahern took a shot on net that ricocheted off Tasiopoulos's glove and dropped behind him where Mullin found the puck and knocked it in.

Senior Bryan Luther would pick up an assist as he started a play with his pass to Hyslip resulting in another Hawks goal.

The Hawks added some insurance to their one-goal lead when Hyslip notched his second goal of the game. Bryan Sullivan took a turn-around shot from the top of the left circle that was deflected in the slot by Tyler Savage. Hyslip picked up the loose puck and batted it in.

The Hawks' final blow came from junior Greg Crovo in the form of an empty-net goal at 19:52.

Saint Anselm will face off with No. 2 Franklin Pierce on Saturday, March 2 in the Northeast-10 Championship title game at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.

Men’s Basketball Receives Balanced Effort in 74-56 Win Over Saint Michael’s

Junior John Nielsen and sophomore Chris Santo each led four Hawks in double figures with 13 points, as the Saint Anselm College men's basketball team posted a 74-56 victory against Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.

The Hawks return to action in their regular-season finale on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. when they play host to Stonehill College at Stoutenburgh. They will clinch the Northeast-10 Regular-Season Championship and the top seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship tournament with a win or losses by Franklin Pierce University and Assumption College.

If you have ever sat in class and wondered “why would I ever need to know this information?” you may be able to find an answer from a participant in the Quiz Bowl. This year, twelve teams are competing in the 16th annual Saint Anselm College Quiz Bowl held by the Classics Society, which is described as a “Jeopardyesque” event in which each team tries to be the first to hit the buzzer and correctly answer a wide range of challenging questions.

Held every Thursday in Alumni Hall, nearly sixty students take part in competitive rounds, attempting to answer questions in a variety of subjects, such as history, geography, literature, physics, and pop culture. The anticipation mounts in the room, as students are asked questions in categories such as “Name these Civil War Battles.” The race to the buzzer, followed by an urgent “I need an answer please!” makes the competition a truly intense event.

Though the competition is extremely tough, students, Classics Faculty, and alumnae make sure that at the end of the day, the competition proves to be a fun experience for each member involved. With fun, creative team names such as “50 Shades of Goulet” and “Sometimes Y”, the students make sure that the competition yields no hard feelings, as “good job” and “congratulations” is expressed to one another at the end of the event, that is, of course, after each student reassures their team members they knew the answer, as one student exclaimed “she pressed it a millisecond before me!”

The Quiz Bowl continues through February, as the teams with the most wins and total points in the competitive rounds will advance to the tournament round.

The book, an account of Camp Keating in Afghanistan, sent Tapper into Afghanistan and deep into researching the war, soldiers, and their families. “It was something I needed to do to get beyond the reported statistics and debates that seemed rather cold.” A poignant moment personally and professionally, Tapper first encountered news of the war when he was holding his newborn son. Realizing parents were losing their children while he was cradling his; inspired Tapper to delve into a story the media merely skimmed the surface of. Tapper plans to continue that deeper examination on his show airing on CNN in March.

No stranger to changing career paths, Tapper imparted a bit of wisdom to Saint Anselm students, “Don’t worry if you do not know what you want to do for the rest of your life. You may not figure it out for a decade.”

Tucker Mullin, a senior forward and captain on the Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team, was selected as one of only five finalists from a nationwide pool of 11 nominees for the 2013 BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award, trustee Paul Sheehan announced late Friday evening.

The Hockey Humanitarian Award, currently in its 18th season of existence, is awarded annually to college hockey's finest citizen and seeks to recognize college hockey players at all levels, who give back to their communities in the true humanitarian spirit. The award seeks "not to celebrate Hall of Fame athletes, but rather Hall of Fame human beings," according to the BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award Web site.

In addition to Mullin, other finalists include senior forward Brett Beebe from Western Michigan, senior forward Alyssa Zupon from Yale, senior defenseman Kaare Odegard from Alaska, and junior defenseman Jeffrey Reppucci from Holy Cross.

Mullin was nominated as a result of his many charitable endeavors that he has undertaken over the previous four seasons. The senior forward and two-time team captain co-founded the Thomas E. Smith Fight to Cure Paralysis foundation, a 501c(3) non-profit organization, which benefits those affected by and living with paralysis through emotional and financial support. Since the foundation's establishment May 12, 2010, Mullin and his co-Founder, Thomas Smith, have organized a variety of fundraising activities throughout New England and beyond. Through their fundraising undertakings, including an annual golf tournament, they have raised over $51,000 and given $34,700 in grants, including a $15,000 grant to former Merrimack College player Chic Kelly and his foundation, dedicated to improving the lives of spinal cord injury victims.

Mullin has developed a "Massachusetts Cure Paralysis" license plate, the first-ever vanity license plate designed to benefit paralysis research. All proceeds generated from the license plate will support Invivo Therapeutics and their efforts developing scaffolding systems for patients with acute spinal cord injuries.

Mullin has also been proactive in other endeavors, serving as a student ambassador for Team IMPACT, a New England based non-profit that serves children facing life-threatening diseases by creating team-based support systems. The group strives to harness the power of teamwork by matching up children with collegiate athletic teams.

Last season, Mullin and his teammates "adopted" nine-year old Benjamin Roy, a regular attendee at Saint Anselm home ice hockey games. Benjamin has defied all odds since the age of four, having been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia pre-B cell in 2007. The youngster is someone who Mullin characterizes as a "big part of the team." In addition to hosting Benjamin at the rink, Mullin has been a huge part of his life off the ice. (Read more about Ben in a recent blog post "Hockey Players, Coaches, and… Batman?")

Mullin was present at Benjamin's first communion, as well as attending his ninth birthday party and watching the 2013 NFL Super Bowl with Ben and his hockey teammates.

Mullin's efforts were also recognized the past two seasons by the award trustees, as he earned a place among finalists in both 2011 and 2012. Mullin was one of three sophomore student-athletes nominated for the award in 2011 and was also one of the eight finalists from the original pool of 25 nominees. Last season, as a junior, Mullin earned a spot as one of five finalists – the only junior finalist out of the 23 nominees.

On the ice, Mullin has helped the team to a 13-8-3 overall record and a 9-7-2 reco rd in the ECAC East. So far this season, Mullin has recorded 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists. In his four-year tenure with the team he has accumulated 47 goals and 54 assists for 101 career points. He notched his 100th career point Feb. 15 as the Hawks defeated the University of Southern Maine, 6-4.

The 2013 award winner will be recognized in a special ceremony on Friday, April 12, 2013, as part of the 2013 NCAA Men's Frozen Four, held this year in Pittsburgh, Pa., at the Consol Energy Center.

Students gathered Tuesday night in Goulet for the second of a series of Arabic classes, put on by the Muslim Student Association. Taught by Abdelaziz AlSharawy "Zizo" '16 from Egypt, these classes are optional but available to all students free of cost.

Zizo's method of teaching is a combination of speaking and writing lessons in Arabic, as well as a bit of culture associated with the Arabic language. This may seem like any other language class you could take, except that Zizo welcomes and encourages feedback from those who participate in the classes. "Let me know if there is anything you want to learn to say in Arabic, or if you want to focus more on one thing than another,” he emphasized, "I'll teach you what you want to learn."

Zizo started off the class with Arabic greetings and the alphabet. "I say Al Salaam Alaykom and you reply Alykom Al Salaam," Zizo said at the start of the class. "You can say this to anyone who speaks Arabic and they will understand it as a friendly greeting." Zizo conversed back and forth with the class, and also had students converse with each other in Arabic, practicing what they learned.

Zizo handed the class an Arabic alphabet and went over it with everyone. The students in the room were a mixture of those new to the class and returners. Zizo wrote the Arabic alphabet on the white board, emphasizing the importance of pitch and diction in pronouncing Arabic letter sounds. Zizo had a lot of "repeat after me" exercises to make sure everyone could pronounce the words, usually ending up in giggles until the students pronounced it correctly.

Some students pronounced the different sounds with ease while others had a bit of difficulty. Joe Donahue '13 had a bit of trouble with some letters. "I'm getting the pronunciation confused," Donahue said, "You’re mixing up three different letters" Zizo said to him with a laugh, "You’ll get it." Zizo’s reassuring attitude and sense of humor helped students learn in a very carefree environment with no pressure.

Zizo is hoping to have a solid Arabic class as a foundation for students to speak basic conversations with each other and to really progress. The class meets every Tuesday night at 6:00 and is open to all members of the Saint Anselm College community.

Over thirty students of various majors attended Pizza and Politics at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics with guest Carl Cameron. “Campaign Carl,” a New Hampshire native and Fox News's Chief Political Correspondent, spoke with students Monday night. After an extensive career in politics, Cameron discussed all things political from potential 2016 presidential candidates to the influence technology has on today’s political landscape.

Not only did Cameron share his knowledge on national politics, but he also commented on the important role of New Hampshire. Having been the political director of WMUR-TV, a Manchester based television station well known for its political coverage, he has seen the impact NH can have on a candidate. “New Hampshire politics requires depth. We demand more and we expect more.”

Students engaged both the political aspect and the journalistic side of Cameron. He offered advice applicable to all majors in the room, “There is wisdom in experience.”
