The workshop brought together 16 writers hoping to improve their skills and dazzle the publishing world with their stories of zombies, vampires, and living on the moon.

These students of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, flew in from as far as Australia and Singapore, leaving behind their families and quitting their jobs to spend six weeks with Cavelos. They all hope to eventually be published authors.

In this podcast with Jeanne Cavelos, she discusses the workshop, her students, science fiction, and the world of publishing.

On the Saint Anselm College campus, Jay Pitocchelli is known for his biology and ornithology classes. But off campus -- and among readers of his blog, www.anselm.edu/mourningwarblerblog -- he is known for his body of scholarly research on the Mourning Warbler.

In our first podcast of this two-part series, Pitocchelli described the his research, travels, and innovative uses of technologies. In this podcast, he discusses the four regions of Mourning Warbler song that he has observed. His current research examines the birds' ability to identify Mourning Warblers from other dialects, or regiolects. He also let us listen to his audio recordings from each of the geographic and dialectic regions: Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Eastern, and Western.

<itunes:summary>This is our first of two podcasts with professor Jay Pitocchelli; in our second podcast, he discusses the four song and geographic regions of the Mourning Warbler.

When nature shows the first signs of impending summer, migratory birds that have wintered in southern habitats begin growing fidgety and restless for the biannual journey northward. In his Goulet Science Center office, with a window overlooking the quad, biology professor Jay Pitocchelli experiences a similar sensation.

Saint Anselm Collegersquo;s resident ornithologist packed his jeep this spring to continue his research on song variation in the Mourning Warbler. Pitocchelli, the preeminent expert on this olive-green and yellow warbler, named for its black bib and grey hood, has identified four regions with specific variations on the speciesrsquo; song. This summer alone, he has observed and tracked the Mourning Warbler in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin, as well as the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

While he drives the estimated 4,000 miles by himself, he keeps students, colleagues, and family updated on his blog, www.anselm.edu/mourningwarblerblog. He also posts audio, digital video, and photos of flora and fauna.

In this podcast, we asked him about his research, use of technology, and the art of bringing the two together in pursuit of science.

<itunes:summary>On February 23, the New Hampshire Institute of Politics (NHIOP) welcomed Time editor-at-large and political analyst Mark Halperin to campus for a full day of activities and an evening lecture.

Halperin began his day meeting with a small group of Student Ambassadors and members of the college faculty to discuss program ideas and political journalism. After an afternoon writing articles for Time in the NHIOP Research Center, Halperin met with a group of students and staff to discuss possible future civic education initiatives. He then participated in a video interview with Jennifer Donahue in the NHIOP Studio on President Obamarsquo;s first 100 days and then a dinnernbsp; hosted by President Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., with guests from the campus community.

In Halperin's evening lecture, entitled ldquo;The Obama Administrationmdash;The Story So Far,rdquo; he discussed both the successes and challenges confronting the Obama administration. He also used the opportunity to discuss his thoughts concerning the New Hampshire primary for 2012. While Halperin hesitated from making any predictions, citing past experiences of predicting Hillary Clinton would not be the choice for Secretary of State, he enjoyed the prospect of discussing politics with people who ldquo;were not only interested in politics, but who understand [it] well.rdquo;

He began his lecture discussing the positives that have emerged from the Obama administration. He believes that a great strength of President Obama is that he is well suited for pressure and never overreacts. Halperin described Obama as ldquo;even, rdquo; never overreacting when things are bad, but also never getting too excited when things are good. Obama, in Halperinrsquo;s view, has not been overwhelmed by the job and has not displayed any visible sense of panic. He argued that this personality type is extremely beneficial, especially during times of crisis.

Halperin also thought that Obama had made very good choices for his appointments, calling the members of his cabinet ldquo;impressive.rdquo; He described Obama as a great boss, managing his administration well and never displaying favoritism as many past Presidents have done.

On the flip side, Halperin discussed the Obama administration's negatives so far. While he cited a few examples, he believed the biggest issue was the concern of Democrats on maintaining their majority rather than solving the economic crisis in a more bipartisan fashion. He discussed the idea that Obama has allowed Republicans to say he is not being bipartisan, and thus creating tension on Capitol Hill. ldquo;Problems canrsquo;t be solved with party line votes, rdquo; says Halperin, congressional representatives need buy in both Washington and around the country, and this will not come without working across party lines. He was surprised Obama had let it get to this point so soon, and compared the process Obama was using to that of former President Geoge W. Bush mdash; going to Nancy Pelosi and asking how to get members of the other partyrsquo;s votes. Halperin believed this move came at the great expense of bipartisanship.

As for the New Hampshire Primary, Halperin argued that even if Obama were to be unsuccessful as president, he would likely not face any democratic opposition should he decide to run for a second term. Proposing that Obama will raise close to a billion dollars for the campaign, Halperin suggested that the large sum of money and the popularity of the President will deter both Democrats and Republicans from running. Halperin finished his lecture with some great news for New Hampshire. As the primary will most likely focus on the Republicans, there will be less chance that New Hampshirersquo;s first-in-the-nation status will be encroached upon, as the debate has risen historically from the Democratic Party.

<itunes:summary>On February 11, the New Hampshire Institute of Politics (NHIOP) hosted a lecture by online political journalist Jonathan Martin. Martin is senior political director and White House correspondent for Politico.com. A podcast of his talk is available on the Saint Anselm College Blog.

In his lecture, ldquo;The GOP is Changing Too - The Republican Response,rdquo; he discussed the hesitance of the Republicans to outwardly oppose President Obama and yet vote against Democratic legislation. Before beginning his remarks, Martin complimented the political vigor of New Hampshire, calling the state a ldquo;neat place that holds a special place in the hearts of people in my business.rdquo;

Martin recounted a story of his recent travels on Air Force One.nbsp; He told of a recent flight where members of Congress (both Republican and Democrat) seemed star struck of the President; some were even spotted taking photographs next to Air Force One,nbsp; a scene Martin had never witnessed in his years of political journalism.

He argues that Republicans are flattered by Obamarsquo;s outreach; they enjoyed the lunch with Obama shortly after inauguration and were surprised by his early visit to Capitol Hill. Martin believes that many Republicans are anxious to see if these gestures are genuine, and while they will not oppose President Obama in public, they are more than willing to oppose the legislation he and his party created.

Besides discussing the current actions of the Republican party, Martin speculated where the party might go next. He believes the 2012 race will greatly depend on the economy and the popularity of President Obama. He projected America will see more issue-oriented candidates than the GOP has had in the past, and possibly a focus on governors as candidates like in the post-Clinton era (Martin cited names like Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Lousiana Gov. Bobby Jindall, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Gov. Sarah Palin, and former governors, including Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney.

In order to succeed, Martin believes the GOP must become more issue oriented, and come up with conservative solutions to problems of the 21st century.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>On September 10, Dr. Azar Nafisi, scholar and best selling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books spoke at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics.

Nafisi's talk "The Republic of the Imagination" discusses the ways in which literature transcends political barriers. She argues that literature and imagination are ways to connect and change the world and believes they are necessary for a vibrant, vital culture.

In her lecture, Nafisi questioned, "What would happen if imagination was taken out of the equation? Is it possible to still have a culture with a vision?" She proposes a Republic of the Imagination; a state with a future, a place where all can truly be free.

She argues that imagination is not something you go to and then leave behind. The imagination allows us to place ourselves in others experiences, opening our eyes to the world around us. Through the eyes of imagination we can see an alternative view.

Nafisi is the director of the Dialogue Project at the Foreign Policy Institute of John Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. She teaches courses on the relation between culture and politics and has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The New Republic.

Funding for this event was generously provided by a gift from BAE Systems of Nashua.

Additional support provided by the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation, and the Distinguished Scholar Series at the NHIOP.

<itunes:summary>The Alva de Mars Megan Chapel Art Center's new exhibit launched Thurs. Jan. 24 to record attendance. The standing- room only crowd was gathered to celebrate the opening of "Interrupted Life: Incarcerated Mothers in the United States" with the guest speaker and exhibit's curator, Rickie Solinger, a historian, and prize-winning author.

Solinger's exhibit, Interrupted Life, explores the issues related to motherhood, incarceration, reproductive and welfare policy, and politics in the United States. Her talk, "Making Incarceration Visible: Art, Exhibition, Social Justice, and Mothers in U.S. Prisons" touched upon what it is like being a legitimate mother in this country, how this issue intersects with incarceration, and the high cost of incarcerating women in the criminal justice system.

Upon observing the exhibit, which contained art from incarcerated mothers, their children, and professional artists, one found blended sentiments of pain and adages of hope. The artwork ranged from collages to cartoon-like pieces and emphasized communication between the incarcerated and free world. Some pieces suggested defeat, and others held a formidable measure of faith. One piece contained the words "lost but not alone." Solinger, in her continuing efforts to raise awareness of incarceration problems, aims to let those words ring true.

Solinger's talk was the kick-off for the Incarceration Epidemic series, happening this month at the college. The series includes eight installations of guest speakers, panel discussions, and presentations discussing incarceration, imprisonment, punishment, mercy, and public policy. The exhibit will be on display until February 21. For more information on the exhibit and related programming, please visit www.anselm.edu/interruptedlife.

In the podcast below, we feature selected clips of the reception's speakers: Dr. Elaine Rizzo of the criminal justice department and Rickie Solinger.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Described as "one of Washington's finest thinkers," the New Hampshire Institute of Politics was happy to welcome E.J. Dionne as a senior research fellow for the 2008 New Hampshire Primary, quickly deploying him to guest lecture in a number of classes. Dionne began his career in political journalism at The New York Times, where he wrote for 14 years. He then moved to The Washington Post in 1993, and has remained there since. Drafting a biweekly column that appears in more than 90 newspapers both in the United States and around the world, Dionne has penned several columns this fall from his office at the NHIOP. In addition to his duties at Saint Anselm College, Dionne is also a Brookings Institution senior research fellow and Georgetown University professor

This podcast features a public lecture delivered by Dionne on November 5, 2007, that addresses the history of the New Hampshire Primary, and it's current role in American politics. Following his lecture, Dionne took a number of questions from the audience on topics including the affect that the lengthening campaign has on voters, the media, and the candidates themselves.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this podcast, we feature part two of a phone interview with Saint Anselm History Professor Beth Salerno who is spending this academic year in South Korea as part of the Fulbright Scholar program.

In my interview, Professor Salerno discusses South Korean feelings toward their northern neighbor and about her plans to visit North Korea (this interview was recorded before her actual trip to North Korea, you can read about her experience in her blog). Professor Salerno also shares how her teaching in the states will change to highlight the importance of cultures ndash; a direct result of her time abroad.

I was interested if she would recommend that Americans visit South Korea. She gave me several great reasons why we should hop the next plane to Asia. Lastly, we conclude the interview with a question regarding what the first thing Professor Salerno will do upon her return to the states this spring.

Professor Salerno is blogging about her adventures in South Korea this entire academic year. She includes entries about her cultural experiences along with many photos documenting her life in Asia. You can access Professor Salernorsquo;s blog at www.anselm.edu/koreablog.

Part one of this interview can be found in this blog.

The forum, designed to foster a greater understanding about America's role in the world has been holding events in key early-election states to unite business, civic, faith-based and military leaders. The New Hampshire event featured remarks from presidential candidates Governor Bill Richardson (N.M.) and Senator Joseph Biden (DE).

<itunes:summary>When Lilly Wahl-Tuco was a senior here at Saint Anselm College, she never dreamed that she would one day be the assistant to the U.S. ambassador to France. Graduating in 1999, she went on to work with non-governmental organizations in the Manchester area and eventually went to Bosnia to pursue graduate studies. Though she began seriously considering working in the foreign service during her time in Bosnia, she credits Saint Anselm with launching her into NGO work through volunteering and internship opportunities.

Lilly passed the rigorous foreign service test and got her first appointment in Paris, France. After doing consular work for a few months, she was promoted to be the special assistant to U.S. Ambassador Craig Roberts Stapleton.

In this podcast, I ask Lilly all about this seemingly dream job. She talks about the politicians and celebrities that she comes into contact with on a daily basis working at "post" (the American Embassy). She also talks about learning French and what its like to walk by the Eiffel Tower on her way to work every day.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College played host to Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani in a town-hall style forum. Mayor Giuliani spoke at length to a packed auditorium and full press section about his views and hopes for the future of America, then engaged in a question and answer session with students and the public.

Giuliani used his speech to talk about the importance of experience in a presidential candidate, highlighting his time spent as mayor of New York City. He explains how his life experiences would aid his presidential responsibilities.

He describes what he would look for in a vice-presidential running mate by giving an anecdote about his breakfast with former President Ronald Reagan on the morning he was shot, and explaining how that experience would impact his choice.

Mayor Giuliani made a point of talking about "doing the things that everyone thinks are impossible," and how he plans to accomplish them, both in domestic and international affairs.

<itunes:summary>Can you imagine living in a country where everything you say gets consistently lost in translation? How about the feeling of always being stared at because you look so different? And could you eat food that you donrsquo;t even know how to pronounce?

Saint Anselm History Professor Beth Salerno is having just this kind of experience in South Korea, where she is currently living and teaching as part of the Fulbright Scholar Program.

In this podcast, we feature part one of a two-part phone interview with Professor Salerno from her home in South Korea. We discuss why she chose to go to South Korea and live within a culture so very different from her own, the tourist experiences she's had, and what the food is really like.

She also tells me why she doesnrsquo;t always feel so far away from the United States when it comes to her students' choice of attire.

Professor Salerno is blogging about her adventures in South Korea this entire academic year. She includes entries about her cultural experiences along with many photos documenting her life in Asia. You can access Professor Salernorsquo;s blog at www.anselm.edu/koreablog.

Be sure to look out for part two of my interview where I ask Professor Salerno about living so close to North Korea, the Southrsquo;s views toward its northern neighbor, and the first thing she wants to do when she returns to the United States.

Update: Part two of this interview is now available.

<itunes:summary>One of the highlights of this year's President's Society dinner was a moving speech delivered by Isabela Echeverry, a 2006 graduate of Saint Anselm College. Isabella described her dream of leaving Mexico to study in the United States upon her high school graduation. She was repeatedly told by people that her aspirations were too high and that "dreamers don't survive."

Despite this, she held out hope and applied to Saint Anselm College. Not only was she admitted to the college, but she was able to attend due to the generous support of college benefactors. Isabela greatly values her time spent on the hilltop in Manchester, N.H. She went from a little girl in Mexico who wondered "What if" to a graduate student at Columbia University in New York City who now asks "What's next"?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In the midst of midterm examinations, and with a student body anxious to return home for fall break, Saint Anselm students joined with members of the public this morning to attend a question and answer period with Republican Presidential candidate Gov. Mitt Romney.

The New Hampshire Institute of Politics auditorium was transformed for the town-hall style session, with Romney positioned in the midst of at least four different classes of students. In the rear of the room, press risers were filled with journalists from local newspapers, regional television stations, and the national media. Carl Cameron of Fox News was stationed outside the NHIOP all morning, utilizing the parking lot as a temporary television studio for reports from New Hampshire.

Students took center stage all morning as New Hampshire Institute of Politics Student Ambassadors were on hand to greet Gov. Romney as he arrived in a motorcade shortly before 10 a.m. Once inside, Romney was introduced to the crowd by Greg Wallace '10. During the question and answer period, Gov. Romney took several questions from students of varying majors who attended the forum. Several staff members on the Romney campaign who attended the event were also familiar faces to the Saint Anselm campus, as a number of current staff members are also college alumni.

Following another question and answer session with the assembled media outside the front entrance to the NHIOP, Romney caught a number of students off guard as he passed through the cafe as he headed for the motorcade to his next event.

Taking the moment in stride, two lunching students captured the attention of the governor, obtaining a quick handshake before the candidate and campaign staff departed.

<itunes:summary>Saint Anselm College Nursing Professor Margaret Carson attended the News and Documentary Emmy Awards in New York City on September 24, 2007. Her film, Vietnam Nurses With Dana Delaney, which originally aired on WE TV, was nominated for two awards: Outstanding Historical Programming - Long Form and for Outstanding Editing. She did not walk away disappointed, as her documentary received an Emmy award for editing.

In this podcast, Professor Carson explains how she found out she was nominated for an Emmy, her experience attending the Emmy ceremony in New York City, and how her film connects with the college's mission. She believes there is relevance for current students, as most of the nurses in her film were the same age during their Vietnam service as today's college juniors and seniors.

Professor Carson spent more than a decade researching the stories of Vietnam nurses. She felt it was important to make a documentary film to ensure that these stories would not be lost to history.
